Why More African Funds Are Skipping Silicon Valley LPs Entirely

Four of the eleven African venture funds that closed in the first half of this year raised without a single institutional limited partner from outside the continent, according to a tally by the Nairobi-based advisory Mzalendo Partners. Two years ago the equivalent figure was zero.

The shift is partly push and partly pull. On the push side, managers describe a familiar grind: quarterly reporting packages built for a different asset class, currency-hedging demands, and pressure to redirect the thesis toward whichever African sector is fashionable in a given quarter. On the pull side, regulatory changes in three countries have loosened pension-fund allocation limits for domestic private equity, unlocking a pool that was previously off-limits.

"I spent 40% of my time on my last fund managing eight foreign LPs who together held 30% of the capital," said one Nairobi-based general partner who raised her second fund entirely from continental sources. "This time I have four LPs, they all know the market, and nobody has asked me to explain what a matatu is."

Domestic LPs bring their own constraints — smaller checks, slower diligence, and a lower tolerance for the long J-curve that venture requires. But the emergence of a continental LP base is the precondition for everything else in this asset class. Funds that can raise locally can invest on a local timetable, and that is the difference between a venture ecosystem and an outpost.
