Privacy Policy

If you subscribe to a newsletter, register for an event, or write to us, we hold what you gave us: an email address, a name if you supplied one, and the message itself.

If you only read, we hold far less. Our analytics record which pages were viewed, roughly where in the world the request came from, and what kind of device was used. We don't attach that to a name, and we truncate the IP address before it is stored.

We do not buy reader data from anyone, and we do not sell or rent yours.

To send you the newsletters you asked for, to get you into events you registered for, and to reply when you contact us.

To understand which stories are being read, so we know where to put reporters. That's aggregate work — we're looking at a section, not at you.

To keep the site up and to catch abuse, such as scraping that degrades the service for everyone else.

We use a small number of first-party cookies: one to remember your reading preferences, and one so our analytics can tell a returning visit from a new one.

We don't run third-party advertising trackers. Our ad placements are sold directly and served from our own systems, which means no network follows you off Afrikons.

Embedded media — a podcast player or a video — may set its own cookies when you press play. Those are governed by the provider's own policy.

A handful of service providers process data on our behalf: our email delivery platform, our hosting provider, our ticketing platform, and our analytics tool. Each is bound by contract to use the data only to provide that service.

We share information beyond that only when the law requires it, and we'll tell you where we're permitted to.

Advertisers and event sponsors do not receive your details. If a sponsor is offered a delegate list at an event, attendees are asked to opt in at registration.

Newsletter subscriptions are held until you unsubscribe, then removed within thirty days.

Event registrations are kept for two years so we can handle refunds and repeat attendance, then deleted.

Analytics records are aggregated after fourteen months, at which point they no longer describe an individual session.

Correspondence with the newsroom is kept as long as it's editorially relevant. Material relating to confidential sources is handled separately and held only as long as necessary to protect the source.

Every newsletter has a one-click unsubscribe, and it works immediately. You don't need to explain yourself.

You can ask us what we hold about you, ask for a copy, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to privacy@afrikons.example and we'll respond within thirty days.

If your browser sends a do-not-track or global privacy signal, our analytics respects it and records nothing for that session.

Material sent to our secure tip address is treated with more care than anything else described here. We don't log the sender in our ordinary systems, we don't add tipsters to mailing lists, and we don't confirm to third parties that someone contacted us.

Afrikons is written for a professional audience and isn't directed at children. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under sixteen. If you believe we have, write to privacy@afrikons.example and we'll remove it.

When we change something that materially affects readers, we'll update the date below and describe the change at the top of this page for a month.
